Final Self Reflection for Writing Center Theory & Practice

It was my first semester at CCNY and I really enjoyed this semester. It was a lot of work to do but in this class I learned a lot about the educational system of the US. It was a great experience. As an ESL student it is hard to get an overview about the educational system in the new country. Reading and researching does help, but I think the best way is “Learning by doing”.

In this class we learned what happened in the late seventies and how students “fought” for their right and how the universities handled this situation. When we talked about Mina Shaughnessy I was very suprized and proud to be part of this program. She inspired me and thought me to never give up and fight for your ideological view.

The writing center research helped me to understand how the colleges work. In Germany you cannot find writing centers and surprisingly it is a free service from the college. Therefore, before this class I did not know about writing centers. Now, I know how a good writing center should be and how they can help students succeed in college.

Especially, the last session with the presentations of all the writing centers gave me an overview how they are similar and different from each other.
